As Long As the Rivers RunChapter 28A Camp Different from Most |
|
In the summer of 1960, Bill felt strongly that he and Shirley should
start a Bible camp for children and young people. That camp was situated in the
yard of a closed country school where the Jacksons lived. It was different from
most other camps in a number of ways. For one thing. the dining room was under
the trees and the kitchen was a makeshift structure of plywood and canvas.
Meetings were held in the old school building. Shirley recalled happy memories
of the camp.
“At first, we had more people than we had dishes,” she reminisced. “A few
staff members at the end of the lunch line ate their food from kettle lids and
pie plates. They were goodnatured about it and seemed to enjoy their food as
much as everybody else did. The next year the camp was split into a junior camp
and a teen camp.”
