All the suffering in the world shows that God is not good

What about the heathen who have never heard?

All religions lead to God?

The resurrection did not really happen.

I don't believe in God.

I don't believe the Bible.

Look at the record of the Church

Religion is just a crutch for the weak

Jesus was just a great man

All the suffering in the world shows that God is not good

I have always done my best

Pain, bereavement, natural tragedies, etc. raise profound questions that cause much personal anguish.  The questioner may have several thoughts in mind:

-Is God fair to let this happen to me?

-If the world is so random, is there a God at all?

-If God is love, why does He not do something about the world's suffering ?

This objection is an attack on the justice, the love and sometimes the existence of God.  In fact, modern man has put God on trial and asked Him to justify Himself for creating such a painful world.

 INITIAL CHALLENGE

"I am interested that you said that, it shows that you have been thinking about these things.  There is no doubt that God cares-in fact He cares so much that He was prepared to become a man and suffer Himself with men and at the hands of men.

 THE BIBLICAL ATTITUDE

(a)  Is suffering related to sinning?  Yes and no.  Suffering is not necessarily the consequence of an individual's sin but rather of the general rebellion of man towards God.  The sin of one person may cause innocent individuals to suffer.  Romans 5: 12.  This is demonstrated by the 500,000 deaths in East Pakistan during the 1970 typhoon which was the result of human failure. The meteorologists had given the Pakistan Government three days advance warning, but the message was not passed on to those in danger. We get involved in suffering as part of being born into a sinful world.

(b) Does God care?  He became man and experienced the full depth of human suffering-its anguish, weakness, bitterness, desolation, and death.  "He took our infirmities and bore our diseases,"  Matt. 8:17. We cannot explain  everything about God's attitude           towards pain, but we can be sure          of His love. "Christ died for us     while we were yet sinners, and that is God's own proof of His love towards us," Romans 5:8 (N.E.B.)     God is not a careless spectator.

(c) Can God do anything about suffering? Yes, the Bible does not explain in detail why there is suffering. It does tell us how it can be overcome. The Bible is essentially a practical book. After the Cross comes the Resurrection.  God can and does work miracles of healing.  God is able to take suffering that is given to Him, turn it upside down and make it a source of blessing to us and to others.  His grace is sufficient, 2 Cor. 12: 9, and enables us to transcend the problem.

 PRACTICAL SUGGESTION

It is easy to theorize glibly on this problem of pain, especially when one has not suffered deeply oneself.  The best way to help someone is to show them God's way in action.  Tell them the story of a friend you know who has overcome suffering through faith in Christ.  Or lend them a book such as "To Love Again" by Catherine Marshall, describing the death of her husband,

 TURNING THE TABLES

"So much human suffering is caused by man's sin against God and his fellow-men.  This is shown in Law Two of the Four Spiritual Laws.  The proof of God's concern is clearly set out in Law Three with its focus on the cross.  We need to point out that man's deepest suffering is his sin and separation from God.  God in His grace has dealt with that at the expense of the total sacrifice of Himself.  It only remains for us to begin the solution by accepting Jesus Christ ourselves."
