Because of his sin and rebellion, man is faced with four separations each developing out of the other.
1 . Separation from God Genesis 3: 10; Isiah 59: 2. Cut off from the Source of Life, death progressively spreads to every area of his existence.
2. Separation from nature Genesis 3: 17-19. Man was given authority over the natural world in order to harmonize it and make it productive. But sin put him at odds with nature. From this have sprung our modern problems of thoughtless pollution, destruction of the environment, exhaustion of resources, etc.
3. Separation from fellowman Genesis 4: 8. Mankind soon fell into warring with each other as a result of envy, anger and competition.
4. Separation from himself Genesis 4: 5, 14. Inner turmoil follows with anger and fear. Our conflicts with others often spring from turbulent drives within us let loose by our rebellion against God, James 4: 1.
