How to Photograph the Lecture Series
A.
Motivation: Benefits of Using These Guidelines
1. You will have good photos to use in prayer letters,
newsletters and other forms of
communication.
2. You will have a lasting remembrance of a special occasion
B.
Guidelines for Photographing the Lecture Series
1. At the discretion of your ministry, you may wish to
arrange for a qualified photographer to
shoot a series of photographs. Your
local ministry can use them in newsletters, websites and
for other presentations about
ministry events.
2. Plan in advance what you want to photograph: Rusty,
students, volunteers, ministry leaders,
audiences, etc.
3. Be sure to photograph events that can give friends of your
ministry, financial partners,
churches, etc., a feel for how things
worked. Take a few shots each of things like TV
interviews, sharp banners, students
writing on blackboards, handbill distribution, special
publicity stunts, marquees, balloons,
etc. Check with the Publicity Coordinator to find out
when and where.
4. If your photographer uses traditional film, when shooting
outdoors on a bright day, use Plus X
ASA 125 for black and white
and Kodachrome II ASA 25 for color. When outdoors on a
cloudy day, use Tri X ASA 400 for black and white and Ektachrome
400 for color. When
shooting indoors, use Tri X ASA 400 for black
and white and Ektachrome Tungsten ASA
160 for color. When shooting indoors,
should your shutter spee go below 60th of a second,
use a tripod and a cable release.
Under no circumstances should you push your film. If indoor
light is florescent, do not use color.
5. If your photographer uses a digital camera, follow the
guidelines for that camera.
6. Photograph Rusty from various angles. Take some pictures
in which you can capture both him
and the audience. On other shots of
Rusty, use a telephoto lens to get a tight close-up of him
alone. After the lecture, try to get
several close-up shots of Rusty and the audience.
7. In many rooms, the light sources are very strong and can
tend to throw the light meter off if
they are in the background. To avoid
underexposing, take a meter reading of a similar area
without any bright lights in it. With
built-in meters, just point camera in roughly the same area
but with lights out of view. Often there will be as
much as two f-stops difference in exposure.
8. Shoot a series of pictures of the same subjects to catch their
best expressions.
9. When getting group or audience shots, wait for something
humorous or when they are really
wrapped up in what the speaker is
saying.
10. Be obvious about your picture taking, but not distracting.
11. Feel free to move around during a lecture, but not during the
last ten minutes.
12. Take lots of pictures – especially if you are in a good
location with large crowds. If Rusty is
speaking in the same location all
three nights, you can wait until the third night to take your
indoor shots.
